The future of service integration – looking ahead to 2024 and beyond

As 2023 draws to a close, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the year just passed and look forward to 2024 and beyond. In this blog, the Scopism team and our community partners come together to share their thoughts on the future of SIAM.

Recapping 2023

The Scopism SIAM community

This has been a big year for service integration with the launch of the Scopism SIAM community. The community creates a space for SIAM professionals to connect, learn and grow at every stage of their careers.

Scopism’s community manager, Steph Ward, says:

Working closely with leading experts of SIAM, as well as the 1400+ members of the global Community, it is evident that the hard efforts long before and throughout 2023 are not only being recognized through accreditations and publications but are driving increased adoption in more regions, technological advancements, as well as a strong focus on value and customer experience. Having a centralized hub for members to access reliable resources and research as well as a platform to share and exchange knowledge and ideas is a credit to every presence and a true investment in the future of SIAM. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far and I look forward to the continued growth of 2024.

The SIAM Leadership Council

This year also saw the inaugural meeting of the SIAM Leadership Council. Attended by Scopism’s community partners and thought leaders in the SIAM space, the Council discussions will help to set the agenda for the SIAM community and Scopism initiatives in 2024. You can read more about the Council meeting here.

The topics discussed included:

  • Taking a more strategic approach to SIAM/how to sell SIAM to the board
  • Encouraging global SIAM growth, particularly in North America
  • SIAM as a service/SIAM for smaller organizations
  • Measuring the value of SIAM
  • Practical advice/blueprints
  • AI and SIAM
  • Extending the SIAM conversation outside of IT/enterprise SIAM

Service North

And 2023 also saw Service North, our SIAM conference, return to an in-person format. We welcomed SIAM practitioners from around the world to Manchester, UK, to hear from our expert speakers, network with other delegates, and talk to our sponsors. We’re grateful to 4me, HCLSoftware, Infosys, Syniad IT, 2Grips, Lomnido and Digital Clarity for supporting the event as sponsors.

The Service North brand also continues to grow with Service North Japan taking place in November (organized by our partners EXIN) and with Service North Nordics scheduled for April 2024.

The Service North presentations this year were very forward-looking. In Manchester, Cor Winkler Prins from 4me talked about the evolution of service management and took us on a journey through time, showing how world events have influenced the development of IT and service management. Mohan Kewalramani, from our community partners HCLSoftware, spoke about SIAM’s relevance in industry 4.0, supporting an integrated ecosystem that aligns the physical and virtual worlds.

Mohan told us “With the rise in adaption of IR 4.0, Service Integration and Management (SIAM) becomes the pivot as there is an increasing need to integrate end-to-end service value chain. This involves utilizing digital capabilities for interconnected ecosystem, cyber-physical entities, and smart contracting.”

Tarun Gupta from HCLSoftware was a speaker at Service North Japan, discussing the service architect perspective and how essential this is to the design and delivery of services that fully align with consumer requirements. Tarun also focused on skills, and how organizations need to address this essential capability.

Tarun explains more about the future of SIAM: “As we navigate a significant shift towards a ‘consumption-based’ model, prioritizing outcomes and experiences, the landscape demands a holistic and collaborative design approach. We would see rapid shift in demand from SIAM operations management to adaptive service design. Service Architect will play a crucial role to holistically envision design, and stich solutions covering IT and beyond IT in end-to-end service value chain.”

SIAM and ISO20000

SIAM adoption and global recognition hit a major milestone this year with the publication of the ISO/IEC TS 20000 Part 14 for SIAM. The document, published in December, provides guidance for organizations that are establishing or improving a service management system using SIAM principles. We’re really grateful to experts Michelle Major-Goldsmith, Finbarr Callan, Peter McKenzie and Suzanne Van Hove for their work on this.

Looking ahead to 2024

What’s on the agenda for 2024? Firstly, we need to say we’ll still be delivering all of the regular content and events that you expect from Scopism. Look out for Claire Agutter speaking at Service North Nordics in February, and then in July/August you’ll see the global SIAM survey going live. Service North UK returns in the fall, and the SIAM whitepaper will be published at the same time. Inside the community we’ll have regular webinars and live streams, including our popular SIAM+ series that looks at how SIAM interacts with other methodologies, specialisms, and technologies.

The SIAM Leadership Council will have two further meetings to continue to advance the agenda and make sure we are focused on the right things. And we’ll continue to work with our community partners to highlight the innovative work taking place in the SIAM sphere through case studies, whitepapers and more. Within the community, we will continue to support working groups, special interest groups and regional forums working on community projects.

Staying true to our mission of helping the SIAM community to connect, learn and grow, we’ll continue to forge new relationships and spread the SIAM message. We’re exploring how to elevate the SIAM conversation and take a more strategic approach to the multi-sourcing agenda, and looking at how to extend SIAM across the enterprise, as well as making sure we support both emerging and mature SIAM regional communities.
