SIAM BoK Refresh 2025: Quarter 1 Update

In 2025, Scopism, supported by volunteers from the SIAM community, is refreshing the SIAM Body of Knowledge. In this blog, we share updates on progress so far.

Meet the Team

The SIAM BoK refresh project is lead by our architects – Claire Agutter, Simon Dorst and Michelle Major-Goldsmith. The architects are supported by our dedicated volunteers, with more than 140 members of the global SIAM community sharing their knowledge and experiences. We’ll introduce some of these volunteers throughout the year as the project progresses, and we’re grateful to all of them for their time.

The Refresh Project Structure

The work has been divided into sections, with each architect having responsibility for a portion of the work. Firstly, there are the Foundation and Professional BoK teams who are reviewing the existing SIAM content and bringing it up to date. We know from our research here at Scopism that SIAM is evolving and maturing, and these teams will make sure the BoK content fully reflects that.

This year, we are also introducing a new type of publication, the Compendiums. A compendium is “a collection of concise but detailed information about a particular subject, especially in a book or other publication.” We’ll use the Compendiums to address areas where SIAM intersects with other best practices or technologies, and to look at evolving areas of SIAM in a concise yet detailed way. The Compendiums will have a shorter refresh cycle than the BoKs themselves, allowing us to be more agile as SIAM changes and to continue to provide up to date content. Compendiums can be added at any point, but we have a core set that we are working on as part of this refresh. The Compendiums are:

  • SIAM, AI and automation
  • Enterprise SIAM and operating model design
  • SIAM and experience management
  • SIAM as a service management approach
  • SIAM quick start guide
  • SIAM and international standards
  • SIAM and skills
  • Trust in a SIAM environment
  • End to end measurement in a SIAM environment
  • Building a collaborative culture in SIAM
  • SIAM and other practices
  • SIAM process guides

Each Compendium has a lead author and a team of authors and reviewers; we’ll introduce some of these folks as the project progresses and we provide further updates this year.

We asked some of our lead authors to share their perspective on getting involved and progress so far.

Eduardo Manso, Capgemini said “I embraced the opportunity to participate in the BoK update because I wanted to help the community grow and contribute to shape the future of SIAM. As an early Scopism member, I’ve seen how powerful collaboration can be. The experience of working with contributors from diverse companies and backgrounds is great and I can’t wait to see the outcome.”

Ben Palmer-Hughes, St John Ambulance, said “I wanted to be involved as an author in the SIAM Body of Knowledge refresh because I am passionate about co-creating resources that can contribute to the development of the SIAM community. My goal is to support other teams and organizations on their journey to understand and get started with SIAM, by reducing barriers to entry and making the topic more approachable. By collaborating on this project, I aim to provide insights and practical guidance that will empower others to successfully implement SIAM principles and practices, ultimately fostering a more knowledgeable and connected community.”

Richard Oliver, MSL Consulting Ltd said: “As an independent consultant specializing in Business and Service Architecture for Digital Transformation and ITIL, I have extensive experience in the SIAM field. My journey includes supporting Steve Morgan with the ITSMF SIAM SIG and later leading it. Over the years, I have gained valuable insights into the benefits of SIAM, how to build a compelling business case, architect effective solutions, and maximize the chosen model’s potential. Volunteering with Scopism on the SIAM BoK refresh 2025 has been an ideal opportunity to share my knowledge and learn from like-minded professionals about future SIAM trends and current practices. The BoK refresh group is well-organized and supportive, and the authors I collaborate with are knowledgeable and engaging. We are now at the stage of assigning content development for the compendium, for which I am the lead author.”

Chevonne Hobbs, Illuminet, said: “I volunteered to be the Lead Author for the AI and Automation compendium as part of the SIAM BoK refresh. This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with talented professionals in the SIAM industry who are integrating AI and Automation into their practices. We have an incredible team, and I’m thrilled to see the final outcome and share it with the world. It’s truly an honor to be part of something so impactful!”

All of our volunteer contributors are bringing experience from their own professional lives and giving their time freely to support the community. We’re so grateful to all of them.

Quarter One Progress

Progress to date has been excellent with all the lead authors in place and the teams starting to work together, with assistance from their architect as needed. The scope of work has been agreed and draft structures have been developed for the Compendiums. We’ve had some interesting debates already (is SIAM a framework or a management methodology had a huge amount of input) and the architect team are on hand to make decisions where necessary.

Next steps are for the team authors to start work on draft content, which will then be shared with reviewers. Once the team drafts are complete, end to end review will begin to ensure consistency across publications.

November is Coming

The final, final deadline for all of this work is Service North 2025 on November 4th. We’ll be taking a deep dive into all of the new content as part of our conference agenda, and we hope to see good representation from our volunteer team at the event. You can grab a super-early ticket here if you want to reserve your spot. And if you’re not a member already, you can join the discussion in the Scopism SIAM Community here.
