International Women’s Day invites us to assess progress toward gender equality and acknowledge the work that remains to achieve parity.
International Women’s Day functions as a dual platform where we evaluate our progress towards gender equality and renew our commitment to its achievement. The achievements of women worldwide are worthy of celebration, but we must acknowledge that significant work still needs to be completed. Substantial progress has been made, but full equality in professional and leadership arenas, together with broader societal equality, remains elusive.
A Long Road of Progress
The past century has witnessed women achieve substantial advancements in their rights. The progression from suffrage movements, which secured voting rights, to present-day initiatives for equal pay and workplace inclusivity shows the advancement in women’s rights. Women now occupy leadership positions in previously male-dominated industries as conversations about gender equality continue to develop on the mainstream stage.
The #MeToo movement and initiatives to boost female involvement in STEM, along with business and political sectors, highlight the importance of persistent advocacy efforts. Organisations are now recognising the benefits of having diverse teams as they implement gender equality policies. While these accomplishments warrant celebration, they serve as reminders that additional work still needs completion.

The Challenges We Still Face
Despite the advancements, gender inequality persists. Women experience persistent wage gaps in addition to restricted advancement opportunities and leadership role limitations. Workplace unconscious bias generates additional difficulties for women of colour together with LGBTQ+ members and people with disabilities.
Maintaining a balance between work and personal life remains difficult when women carry most caregiving responsibilities. The pandemic highlighted these inequalities as women suffered most of the job losses and assumed greater domestic responsibilities.
The Power of Community and Conversations
Advancement requires continuous work in partnership with decisive actions and cooperative collaboration. Implementing change requires meaningful conversations along with networking and shared learning as a powerful strategy. Events like our SIAM Social – Celebrating International Women’s Day – work as fundamental platforms that promote women’s empowerment, which is so vital.
This laid-back event serves as a platform for experienced SIAM professionals and new participants to meet others with matching interests. Participants will build a supportive community for women and their allies by sharing valuable insights during stimulating conversations that promote empowerment.
SIAM Social provides opportunities to network with both SIAM professionals and enthusiasts during small group discussions, plus an interactive Q&A session where you can ask your SIAM-related questions in a lively environment.
