World Mental Health Day – Connection in a Flexible World

As World Mental Health Day approaches (October 10th), it’s a good reminder that while flexibility has thrown open many doors for wellbeing at work, it has also fundamentally shifted our idea of connection.
Recent years have shown that remote and hybrid working can improve work-life balance, reduce stress, and give individuals the freedom to design their work around life, rather than the other way around. But of course, there’s another side to that coin. The more time we spend working from home or behind a screen, the more removed we can sometimes feel. The water-cooler chat in the office kitchen, the shared laughter in a meeting room, the almost intangible feeling of belonging that comes from being part of a team…they’re all harder to replicate virtually.
Rebuilding connection through community

Professional communities have never been more important for this very reason. In forums, networks or events, the act of coming together as a group of like-minded professionals provides a sense of belonging and shared experience, which can be lost when working in a hybrid environment.
At Scopism, this is something we see first-hand every day in the SIAM and service management community. People are joining not only to share knowledge and best practices, but also to connect as humans, ask questions, share challenges, and realise they’re not alone. As the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved. Often, a five-minute chat with a peer who “gets it” can do more for your mental health than a day circling around a problem on your own.
World Mental Health Day highlights that connection is a vital ingredient in wellbeing. As our workplaces shift to become more digital, more flexible, we can’t just rely on that connection to happen naturally. We have to build it consciously. By spending time in our professional communities, checking in on colleagues and remembering that work is, at its core, a human endeavour, we can create a culture in which people feel supported, seen and valued.
